Background
Bancroft Village is a small neighborhood of town homes located on Bancroft Parkway in Wilmington, Delaware. This community of 26 homes, which is managed by the Bancroft Village Homeowners Association (BVHA), was developed in 1980. Over the past four years, BVHA has been implementing a beautification plan involving tree-trimming, planting, beautification and road resurfacing. A copy of the Bancroft Village Master Plan is attached; a picture of the plan is below. In the fall 2005, Bancroft Village seeks to trim existing community trees, plant new trees and plant new shrubs and other plants. The Delaware Center for Horticulture and State Representative Joe Dipinto endorse and fully support our efforts.
Work to be Completed
BVHA seeks bids to acquire and install decorative plants along a common area piece of land. This planting area is located on Bancroft Parkway between 9th Street and Fairfield Place. (See map below.) This area is a public right of way which includes a curb lawn, sidewalk, fence, and down sloping planting area that empties into the communitys parking area. BVHA often thinks of this area as two areas: the area outside the fence and the area inside the fence; both are in the public right of way.
Outside the Fence
In the area between Bancroft Parkway and the fence, BVHA seeks to plant new trees (which will eventually replace the large trees already along the parkway) and improve the soil quantity and composition in this area. More specifically, BVHA seeks to do the following:
- Plant six (6) new trees (or more) in the gaps between existing tress along Bancroft Parkway. (See the outside the fence area in this photo.) The trees BHVA seeks to plan (Red Oaks and Willow Oaks) will be planted at least 15 from existing trees. A planting plot plan is attached.
- Improve the amount and quality of the soil in the curb lawn and between the sidewalk and fence. Due to erosion, traffic and neglect, this area contains compact soil with little vegetation.
Inside the Fence
Along the downward sloping hill, BVHA wants to plant a variety of plants to reduce erosion, provide a transition between the sidewalk (outside the fence) and the parking lot (inside the fence), and improve the beauty of the area. A plan developed by a registered landscape architect is attached. The picture at the right is an older picture before new lighting and fencing was installed.
